Crime stories are big business. From Netflix to tartan noir, a good crime yarn has us on the edge of our seats, nerves jangling and heart racing. But they also reveal a paradox: we look with horror at crime statistics in the news then turn with pleasure to novels about murder. Is crime fiction is a refuge from reality or a way of making sense of it? Through sparky conversation between crime writer Helen Fitzgerald and criminologist Dr Hannah Graham, this session will explore the blurry lines between crime ‘fact’ and crime ‘fiction’, probing the place and purpose of crime stories at home and abroad.
Helen FitzGerald’s latest novel is Keep Her Sweet - When a middle-aged couple downsizes to the countryside for an easier life, their two daughters become isolated, argumentative and violent … A chilling, vicious and darkly funny psychological thriller.
