Shortlisted for the 2023 Scots Language Awards the book is Jim’s translation from the original Italian of poems by Pino Mereu which draw inspiration from his friendship with the iconic Hamish Henderson and his life journey from his Perthshire birth via North Africa and Sicily to the berryfields of Blairgowrie and the folk and landscapes he would meet on the way.
Author, translator and critic Anne Pia said the The Banes o the Turas – ‘is a work of distinction and literary merit from a living bard which will outlive its generation; which, in the noble spirit of all Enlightenments, looks across national frontiers; and which will find its place on the shelves of the very best of Scottish and European literature.’
Jim Mackintosh is a poet, editor and producer who has published six collections the latest of which is Flipstones (Tippermuir Books, 2018) and edited or co-edited four anthologies including The Darg (Drunk Muse Press, 2019) celebrating the centenary of Hamish Henderson and Beyond The Swelkie (Tippermuir Books, 2021), a celebration in poems and essays to mark the centenary of George Mackay Brown.
