“Are memoirs the best way to understand our past, or could fiction and historical accounts provide a more balanced view?”
Get ready for an unforgettable afternoon!
We’re thrilled to invite you to our Memoirs Event taking place on 19th January 2025 at Hillhead Library between 2pm and 3.30pm!
Featuring our fantastic memoirs including: Memoirs of a Feminist Mother by Carol Fox, Stirring the Dust by Mary McCabe, The First of May by Brendan McLaughlin and In the Shadow of the Crane by John Keeman!
The first part of the event is your chance to hear more about the four Ringwood’s books, as we dive into these memoirs and chat with some of the authors as well as discuss why memoirs are so important, and what each particular book uniquely offers.
Bonus: the event will also feature two of Ringwood’s newest fiction releases, Kitten Heels by Maureen Cullen and Remember the Rowan by Kirsten MacQuarrie! Kitten Heels was described in a very positive review in the Herald as ‘reading like a memoir’; Remember the Rowan recounts poet Kathleen Raine's 'some-requited' relationship with Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water, reshaping Raine's own memoir.
The second part of the event will be a debate, led by a panel of interested parties as to whether Memoirs are the best way to tell the truth about the past, rather than social histories or imaginative fiction. Given these four particular memoirs and their different but distinctive and powerful social and political themes, it raises the specific question, ‘Is this the best medium through which to explore our political and social history?' All attenders at the event will be very welcome to contribute their own views and perspectives on this debate!
So put the date in your diary now, read some or all of these books (all available from the Ringwood website), form your own conclusions on the debate, bring your questions and comments, and we are very excited to see you all on January 19th!
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
