Exploring the genius of Britain’s most inspirational and ground-breaking comedian, Spike is a new play starring Robert Wilfort, Patrick Warner and Jeremy Lloyd. After making its world premiere at The Watermill Theatre Newbury in January, it began its UK tour at the beginning of September and will arrive at The King’s on Tuesday 1 November for five nights.
Landing in Glasgow this morning, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman were in town to remote the play, and stopped by the mural near The Clutha Bar, which features Spike Milligan himself. The only hitch was that it transpired that Spike’s mural had been painted over!
Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, who’ve previously brought The Wipers Times and Trial by Laughter to Glasgow are looking forward to bringing the story Spike Milligan to the city. They said: “It’s great to bring Spike to Glasgow. We had great success here with Trail by Laughter and The Wipers Times and the audiences were great. We had great engagement with the blasphemy laws in Scotland with Trial by Laughter in 2019 so it was productive to reopen this debate.
“Spike was a big fan of Scotland. It’s a pity his mural has been painted out but we’re going to paint him back in. He’s gooned but not forgotten.”
SPIKE will star Robert Wilfort (Gavin and Stacey, Bridgerton) in the role of ‘Spike Milligan’, Patrick Warner (‘Peter Cook’ in The Crown, One Man, Two Guvnors and Play that Goes Wrong) will also join the production to play ‘Peter Sellers’, and Jeremy Lloyd (The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, Trial by Laughter) will return to his critically acclaimed role as ‘Harry Secombe’.
TV comedienne and podcaster Margaret Cabourn-Smith (Motherland, Miranda, Buffering) will reprise her role as ‘Janet’, as will James Mack (The Watermill’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Rivals, Macbeth and Journey’s End) as ‘Denis Main-Wilson / Peter Eton’, Ellie Morris (The Play That Goes Wrong, Mischief Movie Night, The Comedy About A Bank Robbery for Mischief Theatre company) as ‘June’, and Robert Mountford (The Habit of Art, The Haunting of Alice Bowles for Original Theatre Company, House and Garden for The Watermill) as ‘BBC Executive’. Peter Dukes will join the company as ‘BBC Announcer’, as will Tesni Kujore as ‘Myra’, and Sam Ducane as ‘Doctor’.
SPIKE will be directed by Watermill Artistic Director Paul Hart, with design by Katie Lias, lighting design by Rory Beaton. The Composer is Tayo Akinbode with sound design by Tom Marshall. Anjali Mehra is Movement Director and Ruth Sullivan is the Foley Sound Consultant.
The Watermill production of Spike is produced by Karl Sydow, Trademark Films, PW Productions and Anthology Theatre.
