The Malletsheugh brings unique blend of Indian and Scottish heritage and hospitality to Mearns

The Birk family have brought three generations of hospitality experience to this beautiful venue, transforming a once faded glory into a stunning, modern environment where every last detail has been considered to create the perfect refuge.

With a sensational double menu bringing together their shared heritage of Scottish and South Indian cuisines and cultures, even the most meticulous palate will find something to love.

It’s the heart of the community, an island of calm, a bustling hub, a respectful meeting spot, a family haven and so, so much more. It’s whatever you want it to be.

Co-owner Pav Birk said: “Our family have incredible passion for hospitality, food and people. We love sharing our lives with our guests, who become our friends.

“Our grandfather was an amazingly talented chef but just as importantly had this incredible desire to look after people – and our parents, then my brothers and I, have all grown up with that ethos at the heart of everything.

“That’s why the Malletsheugh means so much to us. We saw this iconic building which was for so long the heart of its community but had lost its way in the wrong hands.

“We want to set that right and bring back the heart of the community, restore what this place was for more than a hundred years – a place people came for food and drinks, yes, but more importantly where they came to relax, to meet friends, to be among like-minded people and take a break from life for an hour or two.”

The building has been lovingly, painstakingly restored, renovated, revamped and redesigned to create a sumptuously welcoming environment perfectly tailored to so many purposes, needs, moods and moments.

With plush, comfortable furnishings offering a modern twist on a classical feel and perfectly representing the ethos of the Birk family – stylish, sophisticated, classy yet oh so welcoming.

The Taj restaurant – named in tribute to the family’s beloved Taj Mahal, the restaurant opened by their grandfather and later run by their father, before the current generation took over – represents the crowning glory in the rich heritage of this family who are as Scottish as they are Indian.

That is why this restaurant and bar offer so much more – this is a home from home, a place where the Birk family will welcome your family and treat you to the very best in hospitality.

With the dual menus serving up the very finest Indian and Scottish dishes, delving deeply into the melded heritage of the Birk family who have poured their heart and soul into The Malletsheugh, plus extensive vegan and children’s menus, everyone will find a meal they love here.

From unctuous, deeply flavoured curries packed with zingy ginger, rich spices and the highest quality premium local ingredients, to Scottish favourites from steak pie to fish and chips to deliciously tender, sizzling steaks, The Malletsheugh brings new levels of produce, food and service to Newton Mearns.

Everything has been considered. Every idea explored, every taste catered for, every whim addressed.

Pav explained: “Our family’s food heritage is very rich, it’s become the family business as well as a real passion for us all.

“My grandfather set the tone for us with his love of Indian food and growing love of Scottish cuisine too.

“This was all passed to our father who took over our original family restaurant the Taj Mahal, and eventually he passed it on to our hands, so we really have carried my grandfather’s dishes, his enthusiasm and dedication, in everything we do.

“Serving the very best food made with premium ingredients is VITAL to us. But so is serving it to you in the right way – for us, our service, care and hospitality are as important as the food itself. We pride ourselves on treating your family like our family.

“That is what we bring to The Malletsheugh – it’s ours, but it’s just as much yours.”

This is the new era of local dining, a throwback to the history of both the Birk family and the Malletsheugh itself – the venue’s status as a community hub has been at the very core of everything.

In these times of soulless identikit rooms serving up bland food, The Malletsheugh is a rare passion project with an entire family working tirelessly to deliver the very best.

Whether you’re eating in the Taj, having drinks in the Mal or simply relaxing in this stunningly welcoming space in the heart of your community, the Birk family are delighted to welcome you to your new home from home.

Sit down, make yourself comfortable...

You’re home at last.
