Girls Rock Glasgow, a CIC dedicated to empowering girls and gender-expansive youth through music, have rounded up their first rock-camp since 2019 with a high energy graduation showcase at Glasgow’s Mono Cafe.
The event featured performances by the 2024 camp's talented participants, ranging in ages 8-16. Bands formed during the camp took to the stage with tracks written, composed, and rehearsed over the previous 8 days.
This year's camp, held at the Glasgow University QMU, played host to 43 young people and 50+ volunteers who delivered lessons on instrumental tuition, Rock Herstory, Screenprinting and Band Promotion to name a few.
The showcase line up consisted of 5 junior bands (ages 8-12) and 5 senior (ages 13-16) bands:
Juniors:
The Exploding Kittens / Life After Milk / Echo / Cardboard / Tiny Riot
Seniors:
The Question / Diverted Traffic / Acetone / Autistic Dog Fight / War Doctor
GRG Directors Beth Black and Alice Black hosted the event to a room full of teary eyed parents and loved ones.
Alice Black, a musician and producer based in Glasgow, gushes: “this amazing organisation was passed onto us from the original founders pre-covid and Beth and I feel so privileged to be taking on the mantle of making music accessible to girls+.”
“Having our first graduate bands play a sold out show in Mono to over 300 people is such an incredible thing for all involved and we are so proud of them and what they achieved.”
Beth Black, fellow musician, and advocate adds: “Growing up I declined opportunities to play in bands because I didn’t think it was really “the place for a girl”. In the years to come, I became angry at the lack of female representation in the music industry.”
“GRG is our answer to that. We created a space where girls can just be loud and make noise, the only goal of the 9-day long rock school is to express yourself as loudly as you want to!”
“I’ve never seen so many tearfully proud parents in one space!”
The Girls Rock Glasgow’s 2024 Graduation Showcase raised over two and a half thousand pounds through ticket sales, merchandise and on the day donations. These vital funds will be put towards continuing to develop this year's talent whilst securing future venues, workshops, and scholarships for next year's summer Rock School.
