Fresh from impressing the judges on ITV's The Voice—where both McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones turned for her—Roisin is using her platform to speak about something deeply personal: her experience with skin cancer.
What makes Roisin’s story even more poignant is that she used to work in a sunbed shop. Following her own cancer diagnosis, she’s now raising awareness about the dangers of sunbeds. In conversation with host Laura Boyd, who also lives with cancer, Roisin shares her journey and highlights the importance of educating people on the risks.
“Raising awareness about the dangers of sunbeds and the seriousness of skin cancer is so important to me. If my story stops even one person from using sunbeds, then I’ll feel like I’ve made a difference. Thank you to Beatson Cancer Charity for giving me this platform to share that,” Roisin said. Her conversation with Laura is not only heartfelt but also eye-opening, particularly for younger listeners who may be unaware of the risks.
Series Two of Beatson Talks continues with more inspiring stories. Susannah Radford from Beatson’s Clinical Trials Unit discusses the crucial role of clinical trials in advancing cancer research, while John Allison from The K9 Way shares how he’s raising funds through extreme physical challenges, including ultra marathons and the Three Peaks Challenge. Additionally, wig therapists from Beatson’s Wellbeing Centre offer practical advice on managing hair loss during treatment, and a Specialist Health and Work Practitioner explores the support available for transitioning back to work after cancer, alongside a client who shares their own experience.
But it all begins with Roisin’s powerful episode, which shines a spotlight on the real risks of sunbeds and the importance of skin cancer awareness.
CEO of Beatson Cancer Charity, Gillian Hailstones, said: “We’re back with Series Two of Beatson Talks and couldn’t be more excited! After the amazing response to Series One, we’re thrilled to introduce inspiring guests like Roisin McCarney. Her story is a powerful reminder that awareness can truly make a difference. Join us for conversations that will uplift, inspire, and remind us of the strength we share as a community!”
