This International Women’s Day, experts from STEM organisations in Scotland will deliver an inspiring and interactive day of science-themed activities and engagement for visitors to Glasgow Science Centre this Saturday (8th March).
Funded by leading green energy company ScottishPower, visitors will learn about Scotland’s STEM industries and history—with a particular focus on women. They will get to discover who Scotland’s leading suffragettes were and find out how many of them were also doctors, nurses, or engineers through a ‘Suffragette Top Trumps’ game, organised by the social enterprise Suffragettes and Protests.
Families can take part in an interactive Buzzwire challenge with ScottishPower and take to the virtual skies with Boeing’s mobile flight simulators.
Ambassadors from the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment at the University of Glasgow and Mathworks will also be at the Science Centre to deliver hands-on activities that let visitors explore the fate of cells, and the world of wireless communications.
Planetarium showings of “Wonders of the Night Sky” at the Science Centre on Saturday will also have a special International Women’s Day theme. Puppets and musicians from the theatre group "Up and About Theatre" will be entertaining visitors as they engage with the exhibits. While the event is open to the public, ScottishPower has extended a special invite to select Girlguiding Scotland groups to take part in the day’s activities.

Commenting Glasgow Science Centre’s Senior Learning Coordinator Tara Gibson said: “Women in STEM have historically played a crucial role in Scotland’s STEM professions and have helped to shape the world we live in today. It’s right that we recognise and celebrate the contributions they have made, and are making, to STEM industries, academia and communities across the world.
“This weekend, visitors to Glasgow Science Centre will get the chance to learn about trailblazers in Scotland’s Suffragette movement, and how they have helped shape Scotland’s STEM sector. We’re excited to welcome ScottishPower and other experts to the Science Centre this weekend for a day of learning and empowerment.”
Natalie Murphy, Social Projects & Sector Education Consultant with ScottishPower, said: “We're excited to be the headline sponsor for International Women's Day at the Glasgow Science Centre.
“Our partnerships with the Glasgow Science Centre and Girl Guiding Scotland aim to inspire the next generation of female leaders in STEM, providing young women with leadership skills and confidence.
“Through our sponsorships of Camp CEO, and this event, we hope to offer valuable experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage a love for STEM. It's part of our ongoing drive to create a future where every girl can reach their full potential.”
