Legendary festival for fire-cooking lovers Meatopia gave Glasgow a fiery taste of what’s to come with a free pop-up barbeque at The Social Hub that drew crowds to sample flame-cooked dishes from Glasgow favourites Nick Watkins, El Perro Negro, Rob Aitken of Margo and Ashley Bennett of Ka Pao.
It comes as Meatopia is heading to Scotland for the first time ever. Taking place at SWG3 in Glasgow from 6-8 June, the festival will transform the iconic venue into a smoky haven of world-class open flame cookery, drinks, and live music.
After being kept under wraps for months, Meatopia Glasgow has dropped its full line-up, and Scotland’s first edition is packed with top fire-cooking talent from near and far.
International chefs
Pat Martin, the revered pitmaster from Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint, joins forces with cult favourite Lee Tiernan of FKA Black Axe Mangal to serve up a serious stateside x UK barbeque mash-up. Pat’s whole hog cooking is legendary across the US and this will be his first time cooking in Scotland.
From Dubai, Hattem Mattar brings a taste of the Middle East’s only artisanal smokehouse, Mattar Farm. His food is rich in global influences, fire, and storytelling.
Hang Fire BBQ’s Sam Evans & Shauna Guinn return with their signature Southern-style flavours honed across the American Deep South, while BBC’s Flamebaster, Chris Roberts, flies the flag for Welsh fire cooking with big, bold dishes.
Scottish legends and rising stars
Nick Watkins and Elliot Cunningham team up for a much-anticipated El Perro Negro x Lagom collaboration, while Craig Nelson of Ox and Finch and Ashley Bennett of Ka Pao bring inventive flair to the Friday session.
Saturday highlights include Roberta Hall-McCarron & Dominic Greechan of The Little Chartroom, Dean Parker of Celentano’s, and Calum Montgomery of Edinbane Lodge.
Sunday sees a strong showing from new talent and returning stars like Craig Grozier of Fallachan, Hamish McNeil of Eleanore, and Amy Elles of The Laughing Stock.
Fire-fuelled sounds
Across the weekend, expect everything from brass and funk to late-night DJ sets. Live acts include Bohemian Monk Machine, Mickey 9s, Rory McLeod, John Fairhurst, Brass Gumbo, Falasgair, and more.
Each evening, the party continues with headline sets from top DJs including:
Éclair Fifi (Friday), Shaka Loves You (Saturday) and Athens of the North (Sunday).
They’ll be joined by Dan South, Chris Astrojaz, Craig Knows Records, Weeg and Sheeba, and others across multiple stages.
